The shelves were arranged not by author or subject, but by the weather on the day each book had been finished, and Mira's own street, she realized with a jolt, was shelved somewhere under 'Overcast, With Occasional Kindness.'

A small librarian made entirely of folded paper cranes introduced herself as Inkling, and explained, in a voice like pages turning, that every book in the library was still being written by someone, somewhere, one sentence at a time — and that Mira's arrival meant it was, at last, her turn to add one.

Inkling led her to a single blank shelf at the very center of the library, where one book sat open to its final page, waiting. 'This one's yours to help finish,' she said. 'Everyone who's ever loved a story gets one sentence. Choose it carefully — the ending is listening.'
